ZOOM - Kids on the Move for Climate Action 2010
![]() |
Since 2002 the ZOOM Campaign is inviting children all over Europe to make their daily journeys independently and in an environmental-friendly way by collecting Green Footprints for the World's Climate. With ZOOM the children of Europe show the "big ones" that are only talking at the Climate Conferences, what the "small ones" already do for Climate Action!
The campaign's modules and materials offer concrete ideas and activities for nursery and primary-school children as well as their parents and teachers that increase their awareness of eco-friendly mobility by getting them involved with activities that cover the topics of sustainability, climate and transport in a playful way.
ZOOM in and Move to learn more about Climate Action!
How to participate?
During an activity week on sustainable mobility each journey covered by foot, bike, skater, bus, train etc. counts as one "Green Footprint" for the World's Climate. Climate Alliance will be handing over the total amount of Green Footprints collected to the participants of the next UN Climate Summit in Mexico .
If your city, town, school, kindergarten, ... is ZOOMing in, please send an e-mail to zoom(at)climatealliance.org including:
- name and address of school (also contact person with e-mail)
- number of participating groups and children
- date of your Climate Action Week(s)
Further information and materials will then be sent by e-mail
After you've finished your activites please send us:
- number of Green Footprints being collected
- reports and photographs of your activities
- (photographies of) paper footprints, drawings/paintings, posters etc. the
children created for ZOOMing in
Please make sure that Climate Alliance is allowed to publicize your materials on the website.

From April until November 2010 children aged 4-10 years old from all over Europe (and beyond) are asked to hold their activity week(s) on Climate Action.
Date and number of activity week(s) can be chosen free within this period, but we will ask all participants to collect Green Footprints during the least one week.
In December, Climate Alliance will hand over the Green Footprints collected from all over Europe (and beyond) to the participants of the next UN Climate Summit in Mexico (29.11.-10.12. 2010)
Where to go?
This year the route being traveled with Green Footprints can be either the linear distance from your municipality to Mexico or the kilometers needed for our joint climate voyage around the world (see below)
Individual route to Mexico City
You want to use the direct line? Calculate the distance between your city and Mexico - this will be your route 2010. For example: the distance from Climate Alliance's European Secretariat in Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Mexico is 9.570 km, from Vienna (Austria) it is 10.160 km.
Perhaps your school/nursery is to small to travel such a distance alone? Ask for support in your municipality! Or just calculate how much of the way you achieved as a percentage.
Joint Climate Voyage around the One World
Our symbolic journey starts at the UNFCCC Secretariat in Bonn, Germany and - travelling once around the One World - will end at the next UN Climate Conference in Mexico. We will go via North America, The Artic, North Asia, Oceania, Australia, Southeast Asia, Africa, South America and we will then end at the conference's venue. This equals 69,487 km - a distance you might only reach with the help of friends.
Further details and downloads can be found in the section "Route 2010".
Join in on our symbolic journey around the world to learn more about the world's climate situation.
Ask further schools and kindergartens in your municpality, ask in your neighbouring communityor at your foreign twinned schools to collect Green Footprints, too!
Why to participate
The ZOOM campaign aims to help children to make their daily journeys independently and in an environmentally-friendly way. The modules and materials produced within the campaign offer concrete ideas and activities for teachers, parents and children.
Nursery and primary-school children, and their parents, will increase their awareness of eco-friendly mobility by getting involved with activities covering the topics sustainability, climate and transport in a playful way.
By collecting Green Footprints
- individual contribution towards sustainable transport patterns becomes concrete and easy-to-understand for children
- eco-friendly behaviour is rewarded
- a feeling of community between children is established.
The local Children´s Mobility Report is one important action of the campaign. Thereby road safety in municipalities can be improved, the conditions for children to travel independently could enhanced and therefore it reduces needless journeys by adults just to accompany children.
The aims of the Hot Spot Expedition - Detectives on the Road! are to:
- improve children’s local knowledge and improve their sense of orientation and abstract thinking skills
- enable children to judge the risk at dangerous places in their residential area more realistically
- improve children’s identification with their local environment
- create opportunities for children to have their voice heard in local town planning issues.
By handing over the Children’s Mobility Reports including their solutions and ideas for local authorities, ZOOM aims to:
- give an impetus to include children’s needs in local transport planning
- promote environmentally friendly means of transport
- stimulate a change towards more citizen-centred transport planning processes, which include stakeholders in decision-making
.
